Notes: | Dani and Xi’an were members of the original New Mutants. Dani now works as a recruiter for the Xavier Institute. This is David’s first appearance. |
---|
Story: | As Professor Xavier briefs Dani about David Alleyne, a young mutant living in Chicago, he discovers that David is acquaintances with Xi’an. Dani pays her old friend a visit and discovers that David is taking summer classes at the university, where Xi’an works as librarian. Dani follows David to class and overhears him answer a question about an author whose name he can’t even spell. Dani asks David if he telepathically pulled the answer from the professor’s head. David insists he doesn’t know what Dani is talking about and storms off. At home David’s father discovers a flier claiming that David is a mutant. Mr. Alleyne is startled by this discovery, which sends David running from the house. David’s younger sister Kim chases after him to calm him down. Dani and Xi’an arrive, and David accuses them of outing him to his parents. The real culprits are the mutant-hating members of Purity, who arrive looking for trouble. Using their powers the three mutants are able defeat their attackers, who are forced to flee. Dani and Xi’an accompany David and his sister back home, where Mr. Alleyne apologizes for his earlier reaction. After discovering that David has already been attacked by anti-mutant bigots, the Alleynes agree to send David to the Institute along with Dani and Xi’an. |

Notes: | Sofia, Laurie, and Kevin were introduced in the first three issues of New Mutants. Derek is a friend of Sofia’s who works for her father, Walter Barrett. Logan is the X-Man known as Wolverine. |
---|
Story: | David attends a self-defense class taught by Logan, who asks everyone in the class if they want to be X-Men. David is the only student who doesn’t raise his hand, prompting Logan to call him forth for a demonstration. Using Logan’s own fighting skills against him, David is able to embarrass the X-Man by knocking him to the ground. After the class is over David joins Laurie, Kevin, and Sofia for lunch. Dani and Xi’an pay the gang a visit, and Dani reveals that she is leaving for New York to find a new recruit. Sofia asks if she and Laurie can go with Dani so they can meet Derek, and Kevin suggests he and David tag along as well. Dani and Xi’an leave the kids alone in the hotel lobby where Derek is to meet them, but he never shows up. The students rush downstairs to save Derek and Walter from the Reavers, mutant-hating terrorists led by the cybernetic Donald Pierce, who impales Laurie from behind. |
